Tooth pain can be bothersome and distracting during the day, but at night, it can seem even worse! You might find it difficult to fall asleep. Of course, you should call your emergency dentist first thing in the morning to request an appointment. But what can you do in the meantime? Here are some tips that may reduce the pain of your toothache and help you get through the night.
Take Over-the-Counter Pain Relievers
Ibuprofen, acetaminophen, and aspirin may all help to reduce the pain of a toothache. Be sure that you do not apply these medications directly to your aching tooth because they could cause chemical burns. Simply use them as directed.
Use Numbing Agents
It is possible to buy over-the-counter numbing gels and pastes that are specifically made to be used on oral tissues. Many people find them to be effective. As an alternative, you could place a few drops of clove oil on a cotton ball and apply it to your tooth; clove oil contains eugenol, which is a natural anesthetic.
Keep Your Head Elevated
Try propping your head up on a few pillows or sleeping in a recliner. When your head is elevated above your heart, it can prevent blood from pooling near your tooth, which could worsen swelling and pain.
Avoid Foods that Trigger Pain
If you normally eat a nighttime snack, try to choose something that will not worsen your pain. Some foods that it would be best to avoid include:
- Hard and crunchy items, like chips and crackers.
- Very hot or cold items, such as ice cream and hot beverages.
- Acidic items, including soda and citrus fruits.
- Anything that requires a lot of chewing, like hard fruits and veggies and tough meats.
Some foods that might be a safer choice include bananas, soft bread, scrambled eggs, and soft meats.
Apply Ice
Applying ice to the side of your face may reduce swelling and discomfort. Just do not fall asleep while the ice is touching you; prolonged exposure to cold could irritate or damage your skin. Keep it on your face for 10 – 20 minutes before you fall asleep.
Rinse with Warm Salt Water
Salt water is a natural antibacterial agent, and it can help to reduce swelling and inflammation. Simply dissolve a teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water and swish with it for about 30 seconds.
